Protect Your Shipment from Origin to Destination

Every international shipment faces real risks — storms at sea, rough handling at port, theft, container damage, and accidents in transit. Carrier liability is strictly limited by international convention, meaning most shippers recover only a fraction of their cargo's actual value when something goes wrong without their own insurance in place.

MyExpressFreight arranges comprehensive cargo insurance through leading marine insurers, giving you full replacement value coverage from the moment your goods leave the origin warehouse until they arrive safely at their final destination.

  • All-risk coverage from origin warehouse to final delivery
  • Ocean, air, and inland transit coverage in a single policy
  • Coverage based on full commercial invoice value plus freight costs
  • General average contribution coverage
  • Competitive rates tailored to your commodity and trade lane
  • Insurance certificates issued same day for LC and customs requirements
  • Claims support from filing through settlement
  • Open cargo policies for high-volume shippers

Why Carrier Liability Isn't Enough

Many shippers assume that if a carrier damages their freight, the carrier pays. In reality, carrier liability is limited by law and contract — often to as little as $500 per container under US law or a few dollars per kilogram under international conventions.

  • Ocean (Carriage of Goods by Sea Act): Carrier liability capped at $500 per package or customary freight unit — far below actual cargo value in most cases.
  • Air (Warsaw / Montreal Convention): Liability limited to approximately $20 per kilogram for most air cargo.
  • Truck (Carmack Amendment): Liability based on actual loss but subject to declared value limits and carrier defenses.
  • General Average: If a vessel declares general average, all cargo interests — including undamaged cargo — must contribute to the loss. Without insurance, this can mean significant out-of-pocket costs to recover your own goods.

Cargo insurance closes these gaps and ensures you recover your full commercial value — not the carrier's contractual minimum.

Coverage Options

We offer coverage levels to fit every risk profile and budget — from comprehensive all-risk protection to more targeted named-perils policies.

All-Risk Coverage

The broadest available protection. Covers physical loss or damage to cargo from any external cause — including rough handling, water damage, theft, fire, collision, and sinking. Recommended for most commercial shipments.

Named Perils Coverage

Covers only specific listed risks — typically fire, sinking, stranding, collision, and jettison. A more cost-effective option for lower-value or robust commodities where all-risk coverage is not warranted.

Total Loss Only (TLO)

Covers only the total loss of the entire shipment — not partial damage. The most economical option, suited for bulk commodities and situations where the cost of partial loss claims is expected to be minimal.

General Average Coverage

Protects against general average contributions required when a vessel or carrier sacrifices part of a cargo to save the whole voyage. Without this coverage, even undamaged cargo can be held until a contribution is paid.

Open Cargo Policy

An annual blanket policy for high-volume shippers that automatically covers all shipments during the policy period. Eliminates the need to arrange coverage shipment-by-shipment and often results in better rates.

Project Cargo Insurance

Specialized coverage for high-value, oversized, or one-of-a-kind cargo — machinery, industrial equipment, art, and project goods. Tailored terms, agreed value, and survey requirements as needed.

Commodity-Specific Coverage

Different commodities carry different risk profiles, and cargo insurance rates and terms are tailored accordingly. MyExpressFreight arranges coverage for all major commodity types shipped internationally.

  • Electronics & Technology: High-value, theft-prone goods covered with all-risk terms and enhanced theft protection clauses.
  • Pharmaceuticals & Medical: Temperature excursion coverage available alongside standard all-risk for FDA-regulated cargo.
  • Food & Agricultural Products: Coverage for spoilage, contamination, and loss on reefer shipments where temperature integrity is critical.
  • Machinery & Industrial Equipment: Coverage for mechanical breakdown during transit, scratching, denting, and breakage on oversized or sensitive equipment.
  • Apparel & Consumer Goods: Comprehensive coverage for high-volume containerized retail cargo on all major trade lanes.
  • Automotive & Vehicles: Coverage for vehicles shipped in containers or RORO, including mechanical and cosmetic damage.
  • Chemicals & Hazardous Materials: Specialized coverage for DG cargo with appropriate terms for regulated commodities.
  • Fine Art & High-Value Goods: Agreed-value policies for irreplaceable or specialty items requiring certified survey and valuation.

How It Works

Arranging cargo insurance through MyExpressFreight is straightforward — we handle everything so you can focus on your shipment, not the paperwork.

  • Step 1 — Declare Your Shipment: Provide the commercial invoice value, commodity type, origin, and destination. We'll confirm the insurable value including freight costs.
  • Step 2 — Select Coverage: We recommend the appropriate coverage level and terms for your cargo type and route. You choose what fits your risk tolerance and budget.
  • Step 3 — Certificate Issued: We issue a marine cargo insurance certificate — typically same day. This certificate satisfies letter of credit requirements and is accepted by customs worldwide.
  • Step 4 — Shipment Covered: Your cargo is covered from origin warehouse through to final delivery, including all ocean, air, and inland transit legs.
  • Step 5 — Claims Support: In the event of loss or damage, our team guides you through the claims process — from notice of claim to documentation to settlement with the insurer.

Claims Support

When the unexpected happens, MyExpressFreight is in your corner — guiding you through every step of the claims process to achieve the fastest possible settlement.

Immediate Notification

Notify us as soon as loss or damage is discovered. Prompt notice is critical — delays can affect your ability to recover. We file the initial claim notice with the insurer on your behalf.

Documentation Guidance

We tell you exactly what documents are needed: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, survey report, carrier damage notice, and photos. We help compile the complete claim file.

Surveyor Coordination

For significant losses, a marine surveyor inspects and documents the damage. We coordinate surveyor appointment at the destination port or delivery point to protect your recovery rights.

Settlement Follow-Through

We follow the claim through from filing to payment, communicating with the insurer on your behalf and ensuring your settlement reflects the full covered value of your loss.
